Baby Must-Have's

Being a first-time mom is hard. There is a lot of research, tons of recommendations, and so many contradicting opinions... I get it! When I was pregnant with my first born I had NOWHERE to start. Mom and mother-in-law's advice was a bit outdated, and friends and coworker's suggestions a little confusing. With so many options out there it can become overwhelming. I made this Must-Have products that I know you will find the most helpful and what I found 100% worth buying because it made my life easier. These products are quality products that benefit you, your baby, and your pocket. And some of these can be used through many stages of your baby growing up.

     

    Baby Bottles

    I did so much research on baby bottles, and I came to the conclusion that glass baby bottles were the best option instead of plastic baby bottles for several reasons:

    1. Safety: Glass is considered a safer material for baby bottles because it does not contain harmful chemicals that may leach into the baby's milk or formula. Some plastics may contain substances like BPA (bisphenol A), which has been a concern due to its potential negative health effects.

    2. Chemical-Free: Glass is nonporous and doesn't absorb odors or flavors from the contents, ensuring that the baby's milk or formula remains untainted. In contrast, plastic bottles may absorb odors and flavors over time.
    3. Durability: Glass bottles are less prone to scratches than plastic bottles. They are also less likely to develop cracks or other damage that could potentially harbor bacteria.

    4. Environmentally Friendly: Glass is recyclable and, therefore, more environmentally friendly than many types of plastic. It can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality.

    5. Temperature Resistance: Glass is resistant to temperature changes, and it can be safely used in the microwave or dishwasher without the risk of warping or deteriorating.

    6. Longevity: Glass bottles have a longer lifespan than plastic bottles if handled carefully. They can be reused for subsequent children or repurposed for other storage needs.

      Despite these advantages, it's important to note that glass bottles are heavier and more fragile than plastic bottles, which may make them less practical in certain situations. Additionally, advancements in baby bottle technology have led to the production of safe and BPA-free plastic bottles. When choosing between glass and plastic, parents should consider their lifestyle, preferences, and the specific needs of their baby.

      I have been using the Philips AVENT Glass Natural Baby Bottle with Natural Response Nipple since my baby was born. She is 15 months old and we still use it. Regardless of the popular option that glass bottles are too heavy, I didn't find any difficulty to hold or any difference in the weight in the baby backpack. 

       

      Besides the advantages I mentioned before, I also love these baby bottles because:

      1. Pace control: Let your baby control the pace of the milk, like they do when breastfeeding.

      2. Quality: It is made of premium quality borosilicate glass, a BPA free material; It is heat and thermal shock resistant, so it can be safely stored in the fridge or warmed and is easy to wash and sterilize.

      5. Flow options: Different nipple flow sizes are available as well as Sippy Cup Conversion which is ideal for when your baby is ready to drink water or juice.

      6. Most importantly: It has an anti-colic valve designed to reduce colic and discomfort by sending air away from your baby's tummy.

      7. Protecting Accessories: Accidents happen. So, you may want to protect your baby bottles from you or your baby knocking them on the floor and help reduce the risk of them breaking. I used the Olababy Silicone Sleeves for Avent Natural Natural Baby Bottles for the 4oz size bottles, and these sleeves for the 8oz size Philips AVENT Glass Natural Baby Bottle. 

       

      Basinet

      Ideally, newborn babies need to be kept close to you during the early stages of the baby's life. Especially during the first weeks as a baby constantly needs to be feed.

      Here are some key reasons why bassinets are commonly used and valued:

      1. Proximity to Parents: Bassinets are designed to be placed next to the parents' bed, allowing the baby to sleep in close proximity. This closeness makes it easier for parents to attend to the baby's needs, such as feeding, comforting, and monitoring during the night.

      2. Convenience for Night Feedings: Newborns typically feed frequently, including during the night. Having a bassinet near the parents' bed makes nighttime feedings more convenient. It minimizes the need for parents to go to a separate room to attend to the baby, promoting better sleep for both the baby and parents.

      3. Safe Sleeping Space: Bassinets provide a secure and enclosed sleeping space for infants. They are designed with safety features such as breathable mesh sides, a firm mattress, and no loose bedding, reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

      4. Transition from Hospital to Home: Many parents use bassinets as a transitional sleeping space when bringing a newborn home from the hospital. Bassinets are often smaller and cozier than cribs, providing a comfortable and familiar environment for the baby during the first few weeks.

      5. Portability: Bassinets are generally lightweight and portable, making it easy for parents to move the sleeping baby from room to room. This is particularly useful during the day when parents want to keep a close eye on their infant while going about daily activities.

      6. Space-Saving: Bassinets take up less space than cribs, making them suitable for smaller bedrooms or for families living in apartments. They offer a compact sleeping solution for the initial months of a baby's life.

      7. Comfort and Security: Many bassinets are designed to provide a snug and comfortable sleeping environment. This can contribute to the baby feeling secure and content, promoting better sleep patterns.


      For me, it was important to have a versatile product, which is why I chose the KoolerThings Baby Bassinet. Here is why:

      2. Ideal for age 0-8 months: However, my baby outgrew it at 5 months of age. My baby is a bit bigger than most babies and was ready to transition to the crib at 2 months old.

I constantly used this for traveling even after my baby was transition to the crib. I would rate it's portability at 9/10, and I haven't found a portable bassinet that I could rate a 10/10 yet.

      5. Storage: You can keep baby essentials within reach since it has a compact yet spacious compartment that allows you to keep burp cloths and diapers easy accessible to clean those unexpected surprises.

      6. Comfortable: It comes with a bassinet cushioning (aka bassinet mattress) that is soft and comfortable. The instructions mentions that you should use a mattress, but I just used the one that it came with and used 100% cotton covers.

      7. Quality: It is lightweight yet sturdy. Made of aluminum frame, this bassinet is sturdy and durable.

      8. Safety: Last but not least, the corners are all rounded to prevent scratches and injuries. 

       

      Crib

      While bassinets are a popular choice for newborns, it's important to transition to a crib when the baby outgrows the bassinet or starts showing signs of increased mobility. Cribs provide a safe and larger sleeping space for older infants. Here are some points to keep in mind when choosing the right one: Here are key features to look for when selecting the ideal baby crib:

      1. Safety Standards: Ensure that the crib meets the safety standards established by regulatory authorities. In the United States, for example, cribs should comply with the safety guidelines set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Look for certifications such as JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) to ensure the crib meets safety standards.

      2. Sturdy Construction: Choose a crib with a sturdy and durable construction. The crib should be able to support the weight of the baby and withstand normal use. Check for quality materials and craftsmanship.

      3. Adjustable: The crib features to adjustable mattress height is very useful, allowing you to lower the mattress as the baby grows and becomes more mobile. Ensure that the mattress fits snugly within the crib to prevent any gaps.

      4. Slats Spacing: The spacing between crib slats should be no more than 2 3/8 inches (about the width of a soda can) to prevent the baby's head from getting stuck. This helps minimize the risk of injury.

      5. No Drop-Side Cribs: Avoid cribs with drop-side mechanisms, as they have been associated with safety hazards. The CPSC has banned the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs due to concerns about their safety.

      6. Non-Toxic Finish: Choose a crib with a non-toxic finish to ensure that the baby is not exposed to harmful chemicals. Water-based or food-grade finishes are often safer options.

      7. Corner Posts: Corner posts should not extend more than 1/16 inch above the end panels of the crib to prevent clothing snagging and reduce the risk of injury.

      After a lot of researching I found an aesthetically pleasant as well as good quality crib that wont break the bank. Before making a final decision, it's a good idea to check for recalls, and do thorough research on the specific crib model you are considering. Additionally, consider your budget, style preferences, and any additional features that may be important to you. There are a lot of reason why I love the DaVinci Kalani 4-in-1 Convertible Crib.

      Car Seat and Stroller

      Choosing the right baby stroller is essential for the comfort and safety of both the baby and the parents. Here are key features to consider when looking for a baby stroller:

      1. Safety Features: A stroller that harness system with a 5-point harness is optimal for safety. Brakes are also very important, preferably ones that are easy to engage and disengage. Ensure the stroller has a robust and stable frame to support the baby's weight.
      2. Wheel Type and Suspension: Larger wheels and quality suspension provide a smoother ride, especially on uneven surfaces. Wheels that can be locked for stability on rough terrain.

      3. Ease of Folding and Portability: A stroller that can be folded easily, preferably with one hand, is more convenient for parents. Consider the stroller's size when folded, especially if you have limited storage space.

      4. Adjustable Handlebar: An adjustable handlebar accommodates parents of different heights, ensuring comfortable pushing.

      5. Reclining Seat: A seat that can recline to multiple positions is beneficial for a sleeping or more upright position as the baby grows.

      6. Storage Space: Ample storage space for diapers, bottles, bags, and other essentials. Pockets and compartments for organization.

      7. Easy Maneuverability: Swiveling front wheels for easy maneuvering, especially in crowded spaces. Adjustable handlebars can contribute to better control.

      8. Terrain Suitability: Consider where you'll primarily use the stroller. Some are better suited for urban environments, while others handle rough terrain well.

       

      I recommend testing the stroller in-store, if possible, to assess its maneuverability and features. Prioritize safety and comfort, and choose a stroller that suits your lifestyle and specific needs. I wasn't able to test the stroller prior to buying it, however, I do not regret buying the UPPAbaby Vista V2 Stroller. I absolutely love it because of how useful and sturdy it is. Not to mention so pretty to look at.

       

      1. Grow with the baby: It starts as a single stroller but can easily transform to accommodate up to three children with added accessories and adapters. The adapters (sold separately) can turn this stroller from single to double seat, to double seat plus piggy back step.

      2. Toddler Seat: The full size, reversible Toddler Seat allows your growing child to ride forwards, backwards, completely upright, reclined, and anywhere in between.

      3. Included Bassinet: The included Bassinet is suitable from birth up to 20lbs. The Bassinet includes a perforated mattress pad and vented base which provides added breathability, creating a truly comfortable and safe resting space for your baby.

      4. One-Handed Recline: The multi-position recline on the Toddler Seat allows your child to lie comfortably for naps or sit upright to take in the sights, offering the flexibility your busy toddler needs.

      5. Extendable, UPF 50+ Canopy: The zip-out canopy on the Toddler Seat extends for additional sun protection, plush the mesh panels make it easy to peek in while adding airflow.

      7. Travel: This stroller is heavier and bigger than others in the market. There are other options out there, such as the UPPAbaby Minu V2 Travel Stroller, much convenient to travel. However, I have travel internationally with  UPPAbaby Vista V2 Stroller and for me it was easy to transport. This stroller has a travel safe program when you purchase the UPPAbaby Travel Bag. This program covers any damage caused during air travel when using the product as long as you register it. Although, this bag protected my luggage when it was sent to cargo, it was nice to have a peace of mind knowing it was protected by the factory.

      Car Seat

      Choosing the right baby car seat is crucial for the safety of your child during car travel. Here are key features to consider when looking for a baby car seat:

      1. Age and Size Suitability: Choose a car seat that is appropriate for your baby's age, weight, and height. There are different types of car seats, including rear-facing infant seats, convertible seats, and booster seats for older children.

      2. Safety Standards: Ensure that the car seat complies with safety standards established by regulatory authorities in your country. Look for certifications such as the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) seal.

      3. Installation Ease: Select a car seat that is easy to install correctly. Many car seats come with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) systems for secure installation.

      4. Side-Impact Protection: Check for additional side-impact protection features, such as reinforced sides or energy-absorbing foam, to enhance safety in the event of a side collision.

      In my case, I chose the same brand baby car seat as my stroller for convenience reasons. This was my baby's first car seat and lasted her until she was 6 months old. Here are all the benefits of using the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 Infant Car:

      Diaper Pail

      When choosing a diaper pail, it's important to consider features that contribute to effective odor containment, convenience, and ease of use. Here are key factors to look for in a diaper pail:

      1. Odor Containment: Look for a diaper pail with a strong sealing mechanism, such as a tightly sealed lid or double-lock system, to trap odors effectively.
      2. Ease of Use: A diaper pail that can be operated with one hand is convenient for multitasking while changing diapers, as well as a wide opening allows for easy disposal of diapers without struggling to fit them through a narrow opening.

      3. Compatible Liners: Check if the diaper pail requires specific liners and whether they are easy to find and replace.

      4. Capacity: Consider the size of the diaper pail and its capacity. Larger capacity pails will require less frequent emptying.

      5. Childproof Lock: Your curious toddler will try to open the dipper as he or she discovers the world. Look for a diaper pail with a childproof lock to prevent them from opening it.
